This tutorial shows how to set up ambient occlusion in a 3D web scene using Blender and Blend4web.
Ambient occlusion is a effect based on the idea that a surface that is near to another surface will receive less ambient light (the light will be occluded). Shading is calculated from geometry, not ray tracing. Ambient occlusion provides a quick way to make a 3D scene look more realistic.
Screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO) is a technique for approximating ambient occlusion that can be applied in real time.
With the demands of real time rendering, Blend4web gives object level control over ambient occlusion. In the object’s Shadows settings, Receive Shadows must be turned on.
In the tutorial, the objects diffuse color is set to white and environmental lighting is turned on. Neither is essential but both help to highlight the effect.
