Cluttered basements in multi-family homes can pose a threat to the safety of residents and others. So, do residents of Jaworzno keep their basements tidy?

After the tragedy in Poznań, speculation began to emerge about the condition of basement spaces elsewhere. Unfortunately, cluttering basements with flammable materials, among other things, can have serious consequences. Mr. Wojciech Nieć from the "Górnik" Housing Cooperative spoke with us about this topic.

Situations arise where residents can fill basement corridors with various items – from wicker baskets and cardboard boxes to strollers and bicycles. In such situations, the building management has full discretion.

In such cases, residents can quickly clear the corridors before an inspection. However, the problem arises when items such as gas cylinders are stored in private basement spaces.

The management can only inspect such areas with a warrant. For this reason, if other residents observe a neighbor storing such substances, the police must be called.

It's important to remember that this directly ensures the safety of not only residents, as firefighters also have to deal with items lying around everywhere.

"While we have relatively few calls requiring rescuers to intervene in basement spaces, when they do, they are often cluttered. This creates another difficulty when operating in conditions of limited visibility," says Senior Captain Przemysław Michałek from the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Jaworzno.

A representative of the Jaworzno Fire Service emphasizes, however, and urges caution when storing such materials. An explosion of such a cylinder can cause significant damage, and this is not only a matter of safety for firefighters, but also for other residents.

Random Inspections

Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration, Czesław Mroczek, among others, has weighed in on this matter. In light of the tragedy that unfolded in Poznań, he announced that random inspections will be conducted in residents' basements. These will be carried out in cooperation with local authorities and city guards.

The Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration also emphasized that storing gas cylinders or other flammable materials in basements is prohibited. This could result in a fine of up to 5,000 PLN.
