ARTIST STATEMENT

“Darkness is my canvas. When light is used as a paintbrush, new worlds appear and magic begins to reveal itself.”

ARTIST BIO

Vincent Van Gogh once remarked, “I often think that the night is more alive and richly colored than the day.”

As a photographer specializing in the technique of light painting, Christopher Allwine’s work surveys the ways in which the camera can be used to explore the visual and symbolic nature of the nocturnal image. By augmenting his scenes with handheld light tools during the exposure, he is granted the ability to approach each photograph as if it were a blank canvas – using theatrical and cinematic techniques to manage composition, create mood, and lead the viewer’s eye.

While there are minor digital darkroom adjustments to some of the photographs, all lighting effects are generated in real time and captured “in-camera” during the time exposures. Christopher’s images are not Photoshop creations.

Luminous, striking and intriguing, Allwine’s progressive style of art photography has been exhibited in top art shows throughout Southern California – predominantly within the artist colony of Laguna Beach. In addition to appearing as a guest artist in numerous galleries up and down the coast, he has been featured at all three of the city’s major art festivals, including Sawdust Festival, Laguna Art-A-Fair, and the prestigious Festival of Arts / Pageant of the Masters.

2022 will mark Christopher’s fifth year as a Festival of Arts exhibitor.
