String theory in brief and understandable terms
At the beginning of the 20th century, scientists, thanks to classical physics, believed they understood how the world works. It seemed that major scientific discoveries had already been made and the laws of the universe worked like clockwork. But when Werner Heisenberg formulated the famous uncertainty principle in 1926, which states that particles at the subatomic level are seemingly "smeared" across space and it is impossible to precisely determine their coordinates and angular momentum, a near-panic set in among physicists.
In fact, anxiety among scientists began to emerge even earlier, when Max Planck proposed that visible light, X-rays, and other electromagnetic waves can only be emitted by discrete portions of energy called quanta. Furthermore, it became clear that the status of microparticles can also change, as a phenomenon called wave-particle duality exists, where in some cases a particle can be a wave, and in others, a particle proper. But when it finally became clear that there was a microworld in which subatomic particles behaved completely differently than in the macroworld around us, and the laws of physics contradicted not only physics but also common sense in general, scientists were forced to seriously consider whether, in addition to General Relativity, there must be other laws explaining the strange world of quanta.
After the smooth and predictable General Theory of Relativity found itself in an insoluble conflict with the devious quantum mechanics, humanity's best minds, beginning with Einstein, began formulating a new theory that could reconcile the micro and macroworlds. Thus, a fundamental physical principle began to emerge, beautifully named the Theory of Everything or String Theory, which became the embodiment of all physicists' dream of uniting the two contradictory theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics.
