More than a hundred years ago, scientists discovered that space and time combine into a single entity—spacetime. This four-dimensional structure, which underlies the cosmos, is often compared to a flexible fabric.

According to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, the elastic fabric of spacetime includes three spatial dimensions and one temporal dimension. In other words, every point in space consists of three spatial coordinates and one temporal coordinate. All points in spacetime are events occurring in the universe.
Most modern physical theories, including the theory of quantum gravity, assume that spacetime must obey the laws of quantum mechanics, which govern the behavior of subatomic particles and fields. In this case, quantum gravity could finally unite the physics of the macroscopic world governed by General Relativity and the microscopic world of quantum mechanics.
At the core of the problem of quantum gravity lies the question of whether gravity and the spacetime with which it is closely related can be fragmented, or, in other words, "quantized." Are they composed of individual, tiny components, which would give them the characteristic features of the quantum world?
