Chargers vs Raiders: The AFC West Rivalry Nobody Can Ever Settle
January 9, 2022 should have been Justin Herbert’s playoff breakthrough. Instead, Daniel Carlson’s 47-yard field goal ended the Chargers’ season and gave Raiders fans one more stolen ending to remember.
This rivalry started with two AFL franchises fighting for California in 1960. It ran through Ken Stabler, the Holy Roller, Air Coryell, Jim Plunkett’s AFC Championship win, Al Davis moving to Los Angeles, Junior Seau’s Super Bowl run, LaDainian Tomlinson owning the Raiders, and the brutal Week 18 overtime loss in Las Vegas.
The strange part is that the grudge survived every relocation. Oakland, San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas... the uniforms kept moving, but the pain stayed familiar.
