In this short video lecture, we are going to discuss types of slabs, like flat slabs and flat plates. The flat plate is the type of slab in which the load of the slab is directly transferred to a column and beams are completely missing.
In flat plate the main concern is punching shear, now to avoid punching shear and increase the shear capacity of the slab drop and column capital is provided.
the flat plate or slab in which drop panel or column capital are provided to enhance the shear capacity and tackle the punching shear problem is called a flat slab.
Drop Panel: The increase in the thickness of the slab in the vicinity of the column is called the drop panel.
Column capital: The increase of the column head at the intersection with the slab is called column capital.
Both column capital and drop panel are provided in the slab to enhance shear capacity and tackle punching shear problem in slabs.
