On the basis of the applied load pattern or applied location columns can be classified into two classes.
1. Concentric Column / Axially loaded Column: Column subjected to axial loading is called concentric columns. Columns in which the resultant load is applied on the centroid of the column are called concentric columns.
2. Eccentric Column: Column which is subjected to eccentric or non-axial loading is called an eccentric column. In eccentric columns, resultant load is acting away from the centroid.
Axial Load: Load acting upon the centroid of the column or any other member is called axial load or concentric load
Eccentric Load: A load in which the resultant load is applied at a certain distance eccentricity from the centroid is called eccentric load.
