The pair breed frequently, however the aggressive level primarily from the male makes it challenging. It goes like this: they breed, female lays eggs, they hatch to wrigglers, then the male becomes super protective expelling the female away from the site. This las go round we hit a new level of aggression.

I have a great set up with a divider separating the pair. I cut a few “doors” so the female can escape to her own side when things get rough. The divider are my own design. I use two inch PVC with a channel cut for the egg crate. The aquarium hobby hasn’t made a suction cup ever that would hold. I used industrial suction cup that work great. They never fail.

At 17” the male is incredibly powerful. The female is 13” and already blinded in one eye during one of the breedings. Love is blind? In this case apparently so. The male cracked the egg crate divider. Can only imagine the force. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of breeding large aggressive CA cichlids. This pair raised the bar.
