Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of Cinema Basics, where I give context and a brief demonstration of classic cinema techniques which might help you spice up your own work. Today’s episode is about The Cut.
A *cut* is an abrupt film transition between shots. It's considered one of the basic elements of the cinematic language, which helps weave the story of a film. Most early films where single, long takes similar to establishing shots nowadays. The cut, however, allowed filmmakers to control what and when audiences would see something. It allowed artists to emphasize or divert attention to certain elements, ergo creating narrative, instead of just showcasing a moment in time. Therefore, the cinematic montage, or film editing, was born.
