Astrophotography in The Atacama Desert (Chile) & Altiplano (Bolivia).
The Atacama Desert is globally renowned as the best place in the world for stargazing. This is due to weather systems rendering it the driest place on Planet Earth, meaning low humidity, and altitude, meaning a thinner atmosphere and better visibility of the night sky.
The Bolivian Altiplano shares the Chilean border running parallel with a large area of the Atacama Desert sharing its topography and therefore stargazing qualities. However, the Bolivian side does suffer from rain and humidity in the rainy season.
The Salar de Uyuni (situated within the Altiplano) is the flattest place on Earth at an altitude of 3600m, and fills with water during this rainy season creating a reflective surface, with areas shallow enough to walk in, and salt pans firm enough to drive on.
