In the past, We, as Goalkeeper, did not need to get involve in the build-up phase as much as we require to do these days. Therefore, in our goalkeeping exercise we did not need to do too much of passing / decision making and passing exercise unless your gaffer favors / demands to Play Out From the Back.
Luckily, all the clubs I was playing for I was required to POFB with both right and left foot into various spaces / players. I was not good at it at first, however, we worked on it literally every single day POFB. ( Short passes, Mid distance, long distance, clip into the player / spaces, 1 & 2 touches, & prep - touch ) Yet, it became one of my strength after while.
As I mentioned before, many GKs and Coaches tell me that their GK / he or she is not good at with their feet.( even crosses, too ) So they cannot play out from the back. My question is always the same.
" Why do you think your / your GK can catch or parry the ball? Why do you think you / your GK can dive and save?"
Answer is very simple....
Because, they WORK on it every single day....
If you /your GK is not good at something then you are not working on it enough. Dont blame on someone else or your GKs.
