We'll use pairs of integers as an example, scrutinizing which of these depict a function from the set of integers to another set of integers. The key here is that the first coordinate cannot repeat within the set. Therefore, the relation 'A' is a function, while relation 'B' is not, as it incorrectly assigns multiple outputs to a single input, a feature not permitted in functions. This situation flunks the vertical line test.

We'll also examine how to provide functional notation for those relations that qualify as functions. For instance, if we had a function D = {(1,2), (2,3), (4,6)}, we could write f(1) = 2, f(2) = 3, and so on. This practice will strengthen our understanding of functions and equip us to use functional notation effectively.
