The results obtained from the basic theory of interference,have been discussed. The resultant intensity after the superposition of two waves depends on the phase difference between the waves at the position of superposition. The intensity is maximum when the phase difference between the superposing waves is even multiple of pie and for minimum intensity it equal to the odd multiple of pie. Interference maxima and minima are equally spaced. The sustained interference pattern is is observed only when the two sources are coherent. In case of incoherent sources no interference effect is observed.
