ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY OF CIRCULAR FOOTING ON LAYERED SOILS

The punching mechanism followed by projected area approach is used in finding out the bearing capacity of circular footing resting on layered soil profile and hence, is based on the fact that the external load is supposed to spread linearly from the base area of the footing to a larger area of sand as pressure penetrates deeply into the top layer and hence the intensity of load decreases along the depth if full mobilisation of shearing resistance is taken into account. Analysis for the circular footing resting on dense sand overlying soft saturated clay is done by using assumed soil parameters. Several assumptions were involved while deriving the equation for circular footing on layered profile. Bearing capacity equation for the circular footing resting on non-homogenous soil profile is calculated by using mathematical operations and integration techniques. Further, detailed analysis on the stresses acting on the circular footing resting over the layered profile has been done. Failure pattern is assumed to be a frustum in the first layer (linearize curve for the actual shape of failure). In analysis, the depth of the top most layer is less in comparison to the lower layer. The thesis deals with the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity of rigid circular footing embedded in a ground at a certain depth below the ground surface. The punching shear mechanism followed by a projected area approach has been used to find out the actual behavior of the circular footing and the ultimate bearing capacity equation is derived from a series of integrations.
