Energy Efficiency.

The EPA defines energy efficiency as referring to “products or systems that use less energy to do the same or better job than conventional products or systems.”

But why is energy efficiency so important to the way we live? It’s simple.

Energy efficient habits, techniques and appliances all save energy, lower the cost of your utility bills and help in protecting our environment through reduced electricity.

When looking for energy efficient products or appliances, look for the Energy Star label.

Trusted and recognized by the US government, the Energy Star label, “Makes it easy for consumers to identify and purchase energy-efficient products that offer savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features, and comfort.”

Energy output related to your plumbing appliances can be measured in figures like gallons per flush, gallons per minute and BTU.

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

In Plumbing, BTU is a figure mainly used when dealing with your Water Heater.

And when it comes to your air conditioning, another important thing to look at is the SEER ratings.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is the ratio of the cooling output of your air conditioner during a particular season divided by the amount of energy it produces.

The higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient your unit will be.

When looking at heating, specifically with furnace systems, the figure to look for is the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating. Or AFUE. This rating tells you how much of the fuel burned is actually used for your home heating.

Like the SEER rating, the higher the AFUE rating, the better.

Energy output for other types of furnaces is measured in BTUs.

It’s important to note, that the SEER, AFUE and BTU ratings aren’t the only thing to consider when purchasing an air conditioner or heater with energy efficiency in mind.

You should also take into account factors like your budget and the size of your home.

You don’t want to end up with an appliance that is too big for your needs and spend more money than you should.

From HVAC to Plumbing, your IERNA’s technicians will help you determine the right size and most energy efficient products and appliances for your home heating, cooling and plumbing needs.
