But what happens when it's no longer up for the task?

"Bigger is better". Right?
Not exactly.
When it comes to finding the right air-conditioner for your home, we need to talk about something called 'tonnage'.
Tonnage refers to the amount of heat your cooling system can draw from a home in an hour.
Heat removal is measured in BTUs or British Thermal Units, which is the amount of heat needed to change a pound of water by one degree.
One ton of cooling power removes 12,000 BTUs per hour.
You might think that it's better to be safe than sorry and choose an air-conditioner with a higher tonnage than you need, but just as a small air-conditioner wouldn't be powerful enough, a big air-conditioner may be too powerful for your needs.
