Ian McLoughlin, senior recruiter and military Veteran here at Vantage Talent Solutions & Client Partner within Vantage Military Talent Exchange, interviews Paul Chapman, Infrastructure Project Manager @ DS Smith, about his journey from the military to civilian life.

Paul offers several pieces of advice for individuals transitioning from military to “Civvy street”:

Use Career Transition Services!!

Leverage Your Transferable Skills: identify and translate military skills to civilian job requirements. For example, roles like a patrol commander can have parallels in civilian roles like a network architect.

Get Certified: Paul highlights the importance of obtaining relevant civilian certifications and qualifications to improve employability and to make use of the training and education opportunities available during resettlement.

Networking and Online Presence: Paul points out the value of platforms like LinkedIn for networking, finding job opportunities, and building a professional profile. He suggests using LinkedIn Premium and engaging in networking to enhance job prospects.

Choose Employers Wisely: Look for companies that understand and value military experience. Those that have signed the Armed Forces Covenant or have veteran support programs are more likely to appreciate the skills and reliability of ex-military personnel.

If you need help during your transition, Vantage are here to help.

In the next few weeks, we will be offering a LinkedIn Lunch & Learn where we talk about the transition routes out of service, required qualifications & accreditations and the type of roles within cyber that just might be perfect for you. Follow us today so you don’t miss out!
