My brilliant buddy J3P0 (sometimes known as Julian Pollack) had an inspiring idea last week. Julian’s been known to design sounds for heavy hitters like Dave Smith Instruments and Nord, but last week he posted a free bank of patches for the extremely cool and accessible OBXD soft synth. He did that with the intention of giving the greater music community some new sounds to play with during this strange time of social distancing, and I thought it was a fantastic idea.
Julian’s ace move inspired me to tweak some OBXD patches of my own and to make a track using nothing but OBXD sounds, including the drums! I confess that I’m using some other effects for reverb, delay, EQ, compression, and saturation, but nothing you couldn’t do with whatever comes free with your DAW. I gave it a mix and then put it together with some video that is absolutely live, un-doctored, raw, REAL footage of me creating everything in the studio with my co-producers: Snowdy the snow leopard, Cody the wild dog, and Webie the wabbit.
I’ll likely be including the full audio track in an ambient electronic record that I’ll self-release later this year. We shall see. Looks like we all have more time to write and produce than we thought we would in this very bizarre year. Stay safe, healthy, and at home! :-*
