Suzuki SX4 Second Generation. Reliability Downfall and Restoration. Bring the Automatic!
When the second generation arrived, everyone appreciated the increased displacement, smoother ride, more comfortable materials, and improved fuel economy. Sounds like something to celebrate! But it's not all that simple. The weight increased, the power remained the same, and the trusty old automatic was replaced with a then-fashionable CVT.
It was this CVT that caused the main complaints. Like the Beetles of that era, these CVTs weren't known for their reliability. Especially since you need to know how to drive with such a transmission. The result was recalls, warranty extensions, and so on and so forth. Why? Because sales were in doubt. And there were questions about the exterior, too. After the first generation, with its cute, cheerful, and optimistic appearance, came a rather dull face.
What to do? It took two years to correct the mistakes. The restyling brought a more serious grille, different headlights, and a new exterior. And people liked it. But most importantly! The normal, reliable automatic is back. And the SX4 Crossover is a real winner again!
