CIH was a devastating computer virus affecting computers running the Windows 9x line of operating systems (95, 98/SE, ME), emerging as early as June of 1998 and activating its destructive payload on April 26, 1999, damaging millions of computers worldwide and costing more than US$100 millon in damages. It would first overwrite a crucial part of the hard drive, rendering the data within inaccessible; then, if the motherboard was vulnerable, it would overwrite a portion of the BIOS critical to its execution, effectively making the computer inoperable.
This video demonstrates CIH as it is executed on an emulated 430TX motherboard in a contained environment, with 86Box launched through GDB (GNU Debugger) to observe how it attempts to handle a corrupted BIOS image.
