Ahead of the 3 May General Election, all 245 individuals who applied for political donation certificates have successfully received them, according to the Elections Department (ELD) on 21 April 2025. This matches the total number of applications submitted by the 19 April deadline.
If every applicant proceeds with nomination, Singapore could see up to 245 candidates contesting for 97 parliamentary seats—potentially making every seat contested. This reflects a rise in political engagement compared to 2020, when only 192 out of 226 applicants eventually ran.
In the same update, the ELD announced that 42 candidates received certification from the Malay Community Committee, while 37 obtained approval from the Indian and Other Minority Communities Committee. These certificates are mandatory for those contesting in GRCs, which require at least one minority candidate per team.
Under election law, political donation certificates are essential for nomination. They confirm candidates have declared all political contributions and their legality. The Registrar of Political Donations is expected to complete all issuances by 22 April—just ahead of Nomination Day on 23 April.
Candidates must also submit complete nomination papers and be endorsed by a proposer, seconder, and four assenters, all registered in the same constituency. As of 20 April, 129 candidates have submitted their election deposits.
Meanwhile, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has not yet unveiled candidates for several key areas, including Queenstown, Radin Mas, Sembawang West SMCs, and Punggol, East Coast, and Tanjong Pagar GRCs.
