In the first half of 2024, Singapore saw a significant increase in bankruptcy cases, with 2,334 individuals filing for bankruptcy—a 25% rise compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Ministry of Law (MinLaw).

This surge highlights the ongoing financial challenges many Singaporeans face, with the total number of undischarged bankrupts reaching 9,903 by 30 June, marking a 2.4% increase since January.

The Debt Repayment Scheme (DRS) offers an alternative to bankruptcy, allowing individuals with debts of up to S$150,000 to repay their obligations in installments over five years.

Recent reforms in Singapore's bankruptcy system have introduced clearer discharge timelines, aiming to rehabilitate debtors.

However, bankruptcy remains a significant legal process, and individuals are advised to explore all options and communicate openly with creditors before pursuing this route.
