I’ve heard the story of Elizabeth Mills Oakden Whitaker all my life. What a spitfire! She inspires me and was so incredibly brave. She is my great great great grandmother and a force to be reckoned with. She was lost at sea, lived in Nauvoo, raised the first silk worms and wove the first silk in Utah. She had twelve children and lived her life in polygamy, which she hated. She hated the nickname “Lizzie” so everyone agreed to call her “Sara.” And she was captured by Indians. That girl fought until she literally could no longer breathe and passed out. And her blood runs deep within my veins. I think of her often. I channel her often. She is the epitome of grit and perseverance. I’m honored to be her posterity!
