What is Character Animation in Games?
What’s good everyone! This is Zach Woolfork, Founder of MoreDiverseGames. This is the final video in this series of game art from Horizon Forbidden West. We’ll be taking a look at Character Animation.
3D animation is the art of using motion to bring characters, vehicles, props, and more to life within TV shows, films, and games.
Animators can work on cinematic sequences, gameplay, or facial animations.
Rigging is an essential part of the animation process. Rigging is constructing the muscular skeletal of your animation. Character rigs allow the joints and moving parts of the object that will allow it to move in a believable way.
Riggers can create these working skeletons on human characters, creatures, animals, or machines.
To become a 3D Animator, research is key. Prepare yourself for a career in this field by spending time gaining knowledge of:
The motion of humans, bipedal creatures, quadruped creatures, and animals.
Facial movement and portraying different moods
Mechanical design
Mechanical operations
Weight and physics
Spend as much time as you can on your best pieces of work. Pick a few and perfect them the best you can for your 3D animation portfolio or demo reel.
Show versatility in the types of animations you complete, and demonstrate your ability to portray true emotions through facial animation and accurately emulate weight and physics.
