What is Concept Art in Games?
After finishing Horizon: Forbidden West, I think it's cool to take a close look at all the hard work Guerrilla and the dev teams put into making this beautiful game.
Any budding artists and/or gamers out there thinking about diving into concept art, I encourage you to learn from these talented artists.
As much as some of us have been riding the A.I. art train lately - A.I. can't do the shit these creative individuals have done with Horizon: Forbidden West!!
Concept Artists in games work during the beginning of the game development process. They create the initial visual representationof the game's artwork.
They use the game design document (GDD) to illustrate the style and general idea of how all the in-game assets should look.
Not all artworks are created by 1 artist. It's a collaborative effort. Like this Quen Fleet at Bay piece. Different parts of this environment were tackled by a team of concept artists. Truly remarkable work!
Some qualities of a good concept artist include: Good verbal communication and problem solving skills, and a healthy curiosity.
To hone your craft, it’s important to work on your drawing fundamentals - have fun and sketch a lot! Sketch out your ideas often. Practice using Adobe Photoshop or other softwares to try: Blender, Krita, Gimp, FireAlpaca, Clip Studio Paint, Paint Tool SAI
When it comes to finding a job as a concept artist in the games industry: Have work in your portfolio that matches the projects of the studio. Talk to concept artists and ask about their job. Take care of your body - get up, walk around and stretch often.
