"The God Parasite" is something of a magnum opus for me. It's not the longest track I've ever written, or the most adventurous, but I ended up putting far more time into this track than any other single piece of music I've written to date. I started working on this in January 2021, and although for a while I wasn't fully focused on it, it wasn't finished until just over a year later.
I never really imagined it as being a 13-minute epic when I started working on it, it just grew and grew and got steadily out of hand. The main thing I was going for is that as a bassist, I wanted to do a progressive metal track that focused the bass and tested my skills, which I feel I developed a lot over the last few years. Because of this, the bass gets the only solo and is generally quite forward in the mix, so in this video it also gets more space on the screen :)
My approach to learning bass ever since I started has been mainly to just learn songs I like, and a couple of years ago I finally decided to tackle Dream Theater's "Metropolis Pt. 1." Had I not put the time into learning that track, I probably wouldn't have been able to play some of the stuff in here, so it felt fitting to throw in a small homage to it, especially since Bauul and a number of others on the Elementalism team are also DT fans.
I really hope everyone likes this piece, I think I won't be attempting something this crazy again anytime soon but I'm proud of what I made, but I also don't think I can listen to this track again for a few months :P
This is the last of my Elementalism contributions for now, but you can bet I'll be back for Phase 2! Thanks always for listening, and if you played Elementalism, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed contributing to its OST.
