"Viridian" was written in September 2020. Before a team of composers was assembled, some maps used royalty-free music which was originally going to be left in place until the decision was made to go 100% original and replace the pre-existing tracks. I liked the track for Earth 5 (Echoes of Time, Kevin MacLeod), so I picked up that one and the following boss theme, carefully trying to recreate the same atmosphere for the main map.
(Side note: I think the only other map in Phase 1 that had pre-existing music was The Steamclock Labyrinth (Fire 3), there's still a couple more in phase 2 that we need to take care of!)
I retained a few things from the old track, like the droning synth and metallic screeches, but I took the opportunity to tailor it more to the setting of the episode, with more tribal-sounding influences from the percussion and the flute, and the constant whispers of "deus vermem, sanctus viridis," which I recorded a few times and then kinda spammed throughout the track.
I like how it turned out, its quite a low-key track but I enjoy its mood. The background flute melody towards the end was recorded and then muted for over a year until I rediscovered it - I think I wasn't sure at the time but when coming back to set up the looping points for the track, I tried it again and really liked how it added to the section, plus it means I do something other than just play one note for the entire flute part! Never delete things, folks.
