Hello, dear viewer of my channel! In this video, I arrived at the Oka River in the Sitnensky backwater. A mountain of snow fell overnight, and we had to get to the river for three hours and then walk another three kilometers through deep snow and water. At first, we went looking for pike perch and zander using balancers and sprat. But I didn't find anything, so I went looking for my fish: roach and perch. I retreated about 20 meters from the shore and the depth was immediately about 4 meters. I found some old holes, drilled some holes, and then the heat started to build.

Whether or not roach bites in winter depends on their overall activity. This activity is directly related to oxygen levels, which in turn is a consequence of local conditions. Fishermen have long noted that roach bite rates vary throughout the freeze-up period in different bodies of water, and statistically, three types of habitats can be identified. The main source of water for these bodies of water is precipitation. A small influx of fresh water in the form of streams or underwater springs may also be present. In the spring, during the flood season, such a body of water may also be connected to a river, but again, this is a temporary phenomenon.
In open water, oxygen readily enters the water from the atmosphere, but this ceases when an ice crust forms on the surface. The concentration of this life-giving gas significantly decreases over the winter. The situation is further exacerbated by rotting vegetation, which is usually abundant in such bodies of water.
If roach are present here, they will only bite on the first and last ice, as long as the oxygen levels allow. However, at the height of the season, they will become torpid and stop feeding.
In addition to precipitation, these bodies of water are fed by full-flowing rivers or a whole network of streams. The oxygen supply here is significantly better in winter than in the previous case, which is reflected in the activity of roach, which bites almost throughout the entire freeze-up period. Unless the bite slows down during the peak of the dead of winter, or bad weather forces the fish to hold off on feeding for a while.
