UP 6186 Z-Train Intermodal North - O Street Railroad Crossing, Merced CA
(Filmed June 8, 2023) So today was my birthday and I figured I’d go railfanning somewhere I haven’t done before and that place would be Merced. Since this was my first time here I could only between in one place and not be in two places at once. There were some hits and misses but because again since it was my first time here I had a handful of misses especially since both lines were equally busy. Anyway my first stop was here at O Street where I waited for the northbound Z-train. This is a crossing I’ve wanted to do forever because of its classic SP era installs. Both signals still retain their EM RACO mechanisms along with their lights shut off when the gates rise sequences. M Street down the way has a similar feature with the lights shutting off but on one signal only. After nearly a three hour wait the z-train finally highballed through here at very high speeds. The close gate is struggling and has been doing so for a while. This road is also a bus route as the station is across the street from so be careful filming here and not having a bus block the view. This crossing owned by UPRR is an SP 1950s install with changes to its gates, gate lights, and lights.
