A signal tracer is one of the most useful pieces of test equipment you can have for diagnosing faults in radio and audio circuits. It allows you to follow signals from the start of the circuitry to the final amplifier, often saving large amounts of time in diagnosis compared to not having one. I was lucky enough to have been given one of the newly founded BD Electronics BDST-1 kits to build and evaluate. The kit is a simple build and went together really easily and performance is on point! The video shows how it can pick up signals of all levels in a transistor radio and is capable of being used on valve radio circuits too.
In summary, whether you decide to build a signal tracer from scratch or build the BDST Signal Tracer Kit is up to you but for ease of construction the BDST is hard to beat in terms of simplicity and price. As a repair tool in vintage and even antique radios, for either RF or audio circuits, it is invaluable. I have even used tracers on guitar amp circuits.
