Google Cardboard is a virtual reality platform created by the search engine giant.
The platform was created as a low-cost system to foster interest and development in virtual reality applications. Its name comes from the fold-out cardboard viewer into which a smartphone is plugged.
you can either create your own viewer from basic, low-cost components using Google's standards, or buy one that has already been built.
Users install Cardboard-compatible mobile apps on their phones, insert them in the rear of the viewer, then view material via the lenses to use the platform.
In their 20% "Innovation Time Off," French Google employees David Coz and Damien Henry built the platform at the Google Cultural Institute in Paris.
It was first shown at the Google I O 2014 developer conference when all participants received a Cardboard viewer.
For Android and iOS, the Cardboard software development kit was published; the SDK's VR View allows developers to integrate VR content on the web as well as in mobile apps.
Until February 2016, when Google began selling their own pre-manufactured viewers through the Google Store, pre-manufactured viewers were solely available through third-party sellers.
