After Itagaki’s fight with Imai for the Featherweight Championship, he became irrelevant to the story, while Ippo's fight against Alfredo Gonzales—intended as his preliminary match before facing Ricardo Martinez for the world title—ended in disaster. This fight marked the beginning of the end of Ippo's boxing career, leading to his retirement just one fight later.
