The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making.  Though part of the Executive Branch, we conduct our work with independence to ensure that our data and analyses are objective and free of partisan influence.

We live in an age where data are ubiquitous, and BLS data influence many aspects of Americans’ lives. For example, the Consumer Price Index is used to adjust Social Security payments and federal income tax brackets while the Employment Cost Index is one of several BLS sources used to adjust Medicare reimbursements. Several national data series, including employment, unemployment, and productivity, are used by policymakers to track the state of the economy and to drive changes in economic policy.

BLS achieves its mission through the dedicated work of over 2,000 federal employees working at headquarters in the national capital region, in six regional offices, and in localities across the country.  BLS administrative programs support this work through policy guidance, the management of financial resources, workforce management, and the management of a wide range of administrative and support functions.

Program Analyst, GS 07/09, 15 positions, NCE required These program analyst positions perform a wide range of administrative duties across a number of different divisions in support of the BLS programs. Program analyst duties include activities such as working to comply with external audits and engagements; supporting the agency’s Management Control Program; ensuring that Freedom of Information Act requirements and deadlines are met; liaising with internal and external stakeholders on BLS staffing and recruitment actions; preparing and reviewing briefing materials for senior management; reviewing policy documents; monitoring spending for administrative programs; conducting investment planning; and serving as a contracting officer’s representative.

Budget Analysts, GS 07/09, 4 positions, NCE required These positions are responsible for all aspects of the BLS annual budget of nearly $700 million, including developing the President’s annual budget request to Congress: allocating funds for day-to-day operations across the country, and tracking performance as input to data-driven decisions by Agency leadership.
