The Garmin inReach Explorer sends and receives text messages via satellite where cell service doesn't exist. I've been testing it for four months on every hike. The two-way SOS button connects you to a professional who can guide you through medical issues or coordinate rescue. I use it mainly to text my family that I'm safe. It's rugged, IPX7 waterproof, and mounts high on your pack for clear sky access. The Explorer version includes preloaded maps for $50 more than the yellow SE model. No touchscreen, but the buttons are tactile and won't trigger accidentally in your pocket.
