This little piece of gear is always on my pack now—the RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector. It weighs practically nothing, costs just a few bucks, and could make a life-or-death difference in the backcountry. I used to associate RECCO with avalanche safety, but more and more I’m seeing it used in hiking and search and rescue operations across California, Utah, and other western states.
The RECCO reflector doesn’t use batteries or require maintenance. It’s just a passive copper antenna with a diode that reflects radar signals at a specific frequency. SAR teams equipped with RECCO radar—either handheld or aircraft-mounted—can detect this signal and hone in on your location. It’s not a replacement for an inReach or PLB, but it’s a great backup that always works, even if you’re unconscious or can’t trigger an SOS.
