My easy method to prevent trailhead car break-ins, what I leave open, what I hide, and how I make my car look worthless to thieves.

My approach to trailhead break-ins: assume someone can break in if they want, so make it obvious there's nothing worth taking. Before I leave home, I remove laptops and electronics. At the trailhead, I move sunglasses and my transponder into a bag and hide it with the spare tire. I leave the glove box and center console open so thieves can see the cabin is empty at a glance. Gear and spare clothes go in cheap grocery bags, turned inside out and spread across the back seat. If you have a trunk, fold the rear seats down so no one has to break a window to check. This method has worked for me across hundreds of hikes without a single break-in.
