I spent the last couple of weeks messing around with the ssl channel strip simulation plugins by waves and dead duck software. In the end I ended up doing two different mixes where I dialed in both plugins to the same settings and then rendered one mix only with the ssl e channel and the other with the dead duck channel. These plugins were the workhorses of both mixes and found their place on most of the tracks, from drums to guitars to bass and to the vocals. The differences in functionality are minute, but one is tagged with an original price of 249 dollars, while the other is entirely free. Both aim to simulate a ssl channel strip and (with their eq, gate and compression capabilites) will take care of most of the work that needs to be done in a mix.
Let's see how much of a difference money can actually buy in this plugin and metal mix comparision and if the free dead duck channel is a viable alternative for a paid plugin.
