Millions of websites are still using the "old" version of Google Analytics known as the Universal Analytics, and it's not going away anytime soon. But if you want to install the latest version so you can take advantage of it's new features such pathing or funnels, then you can definitely implement it on your Shopify website.
Now if you're asking if you should switch completely to GA4 and remove the Universal analytics version, the answer is "No." Even Google recommends that you can keep both versions running in your website. This may change in the future, but for now having both the Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4 is the way to go.
Here are the steps on how to upgrade Shopify to Google Analytics 4:
Step 1. Log in to your Google Analytics account, then click the Admin button..
Step 2. Select GA4 Setup Assistant
Step 3. Click Get Started under "I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 Property." Then click Create Property.
Step 4. On the next page, click See your GA4 property
Step 5. Select Data Streams on the left panel, then click the new property.
Step 6. Click Global Site Tag on the next page and copy the code.
Step 7. Go to your Shopify dashboard then Themes
Step 8. Click Action from your live theme
Step 9. Choose Edit code, then click theme.liquid
Step 10. Make sure to create a backup of your existing code before changing anything.
Step 11. Directly below the head tag, paste the Google Analytics tag you've just copied.
Step 12. Click Save.
To confirm if the Google analytics code has been added to your Shopify, just go to your website and browse the pages to send the information back to Google Analytics so it knows that someone is browsing the site.
To check the data, just go to your Google Analytics dashboard and from the left side panel, click on Real-time. On the Real-time report page, you will then see how many people are currently using your website.
It might take up to 2 to 3 minutes for the data to show up, but you can continue to go through the pages in your website so you can see if the new Google Analytics 4 property is getting the information.
And that's it! That's how to upgrade Shopify to Google Analytics 4.
