Eastern Comma, Multimedia Film based on Yoppy Pieter's photographic essay. A film by Erwin Darmali.
Merantau, an Indonesian term for young men traveling outside of their villages to gain experiences and bring back their knowledge to enrich their society, is a philosophy that has been around for generations.
One migrant became very successful after establishing a restaurant in Pantura, a strategic economic location in West Java, attracting more young men to come and work for him. The legacy he left behind is inspiring to the migrants but also made the village suffer.
Based on the photographic essays: Saujana Sumpu, and Eastern Comma by Yoppy Pieter, a documentary photographer based in Indonesia, in collaboration with Erwin Darmali, filmmaker.
