This tutorial shows you step by step how to calculate the ideal number of individual exposures using a single shot, a dark frame, and a bias/dark flat. This will tell you how many images are needed for stacking to achieve an ideal signal-to-noise ratio. The online calculator takes your individual astrophotography circumstances into account. I've tested the tool and will show you how to use it here.
