At Axel Springer, embracing technological innovation is more than just a buzzword—it's tradition. We are committed to continuously developing, adopting, and investing in new technologies to transform the media industry and future-proof our business. Artificial intelligence is just the latest in a series of technologies we have embraced over the years, following historical innovations like the Linotype typesetting machine that revolutionized printing over a century ago. But how did this historic machine reshape the media landscape?

Introduced in 1886, the Linotype typesetting machine was a breakthrough in printing technology: It automated the process of setting type for newspapers by casting entire lines of text at once in lead—hence the name "line of type." At the time, this innovation marked a pivotal step in the automation of the media industry, enabling newspapers to significantly increase their production speeds and reduce costs.

To delve deeper into this historical automation process, we spoke with Lars-Broder Keil, our Head of Corporate Archive. Want to know what insights he shared with us? Watch the video!
