Your creative work deserves opportunity before anything else.
A little while ago, I presented a short film and a chapter of my book to the Southeastern Women’s Studies Association’s annual conference. Luckily for me, this was a 3-day event, so after recovering from what used to be an easy job (speaking in front of people), I was able to join other panels as a conference attendee. In a memorable discussion about the importance of gender studies, Dr. Sushmita Chatterjee of Appalachian State University expressed that doing fulfilling, high-quality work each day mandates that we avoid fighting our battles until after 11am.
"The way you’ll best do your job is by looking after yourself and your scholarship, then fighting your battles."
Dr. Chatterjee was specifically talking about the exhausting daily back-and-forth she has with her department and university regarding the validity and importance of gender, women’s, and sexuality studies in scholarship. Humanities in general are struggling to remain a major selection of future-fearing college Sophomores, but gender studies disciplines often suffer from governments, boards, and deans working to delegitimatize them.
Her main response to a question about balancing department defense and original academic scholarship in a short work day was to prioritize the work that feeds the soul and the mind in the morning, leaving the energy leftovers to do the fighting work in the afternoon.
