130 MPH Pursuit Almost Turned Into Total Disaster!
On November 24, 2024, Florida Highway Patrol Troopers were conducting patrol operations on Interstate 10 in Leon County, Florida, when they observed a white Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed with its headlights and taillights off.
The vehicle, driven by Marcos Tulio Rivas Jr., failed to stop for troopers and initiated a dangerous pursuit. During the pursuit, Rivas reached speeds exceeding 130 MPH, drove into opposing lanes of traffic, passed vehicles recklessly, and repeatedly turned his vehicle lights on and off.
The pursuit came to an end on Buck Lake Road when both the suspect vehicle and the FHP patrol vehicle crashed after failing to negotiate a sharp curve. Both troopers sustained serious injuries and were transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, while Rivas was also hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash.
After being released from the hospital, Rivas was arrested and charged pursuant to Florida Statute 316.1935(3)(B), Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer with Wanton Disregard for Safety Causing Injury or Death.
Rivas later entered a plea of nolo contendere to felony fleeing and eluding and was sentenced to 60 days in county jail, 3 years of probation, a 1-year driver's license suspension, and other court-imposed penalties.
