On September 21, 2024, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper spotted a white Mercedes-Benz heading south on I-95 near Northwest 119th Street. The vehicle was overtaking other cars at a high rate of speed, aggressively changing lanes, following too closely, and almost causing a collision. The trooper followed the Mercedes for about half a mile, during which it was traveling at 102 mph in a 55 mph zone. The trooper then activated his emergency lights and sirens, but the driver, later identified as Andrew Jesus Martinez, 20, of Hollywood, Florida, continued to change lanes from the far left to the far right, nearly causing another crash.

Martinez eventually hopped onto the eastbound lanes of I-195 toward North Miami Avenue, topping speeds of 130 mph. While negotiating a curve, he lost control of the car and crashed into a tree and ditch. Martinez and three passengers then jumped out of the car and ran off. Two passengers were apprehended immediately, but Martinez and a third passenger jumped into Biscayne Bay. Martinez eventually surrendered, but the passenger who jumped into the water was not immediately found. The passenger was found dead in the water around 9:40 a.m. the next day near West 47th Street and Meridian Avenue.

Andrew Martinez is facing several charges, including fleeing and attempting to elude police at high speed, resisting an officer without violence, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. However, two days later, he was no longer appearing in the online jail database and court records.
