In this video, we will separate a binary mixture using Distillation-Winn-Underwood (DSTWU).
The model calculates the distillation ideally and offers a good introduction to distillation simulation with Aspen Plus.
Problem
A mixture of 50 mol% benzene and 50 mol% toluene should be separated into a product containing 90 mol% benzene and a product containing 98 mol% toluene by distillation at 1 atm. The mixture is fed to the distillation at boiling temperature. The minimum number of stages and the minimum reflux ratio should be calculated. A table of reflux ratio vs number of theoretical trays should be generated.
The minimum number of stages should also be calculated by the empirical Fenske equation and compared with simulation result.
The minimum reflux ratio should be calculated using the Underwood equation and compared with simulation result.
