Drop C Paradigm shift - Same shape new sound
Being the guitar player in a cover/original band has taught me a lot over the years. This lesson is based on my experience with playing Drop C cover songs.
Rather than have to bring another guitar to a gig to get that deep sound that Drop C creates, I decided to think outside the box.
I decided to tune the Low E string down to C and leave the rest of the strings tuned as normal. See the tunings before the two tracks.
NOTE that we tune our guitars a half step down when playing live.
The other guitar player in the band decided to just bring another guitar that is tuned down to Drop C.
The result was the other guitar player tuned all six strings down to Drop C and I only had to tune the low E string.
This resulted in me having to learn to get used to playing familiar chord voicings on the E and A strings while the other guitar player could play like normal.
The other guitar player has to keep tuning his guitar because the strings are loose and don't hold tune very well. This would not be an issue if he had a seven string guitar but he get's along.
I am able to get a more solid sound than the other guitar player because I only tune one string down.
I put together an original riff based on the drop C style of Godsmack. Then I follows up with some chord voicings to practice playing to get used to the new voicings.
