EU: Hungary is backing a €50 billion aid package for Ukraine
Under pressure from fellow European Union leaders, Hungary has withdrawn Viktor Orban's veto on a €50 billion economic aid package to Ukraine. President Zelensky expressed gratitude during a Brussels summit for the €17 billion grant and €33 billion in preferential loans, crucial for sustaining pensions, salaries, and heating in Ukraine over the next four years. The approval holds added political significance as American financing faces obstacles in Washington due to Republican opposition. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sees it as a positive signal to the US and acknowledges President Biden's efforts to garner support from Congress.
