আরবী বর্ষপঞ্জির প্রথম মাস মহররম। ইসলাম ধর্মমতে যে চারটি মাসে যুদ্ধ করা নিষিদ্ধ, তার একটি হলো বছরের প্রথম এই মাসটি। তবে মহররম মাসের সবচেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্ব এর দশ তারিখের জন্য, যে দিনটিকে আমরা আশুরা বলে জানি। শাব্দিক দিক থেকে আশুরা শব্দের অর্থ দশম দিন, যা হিব্রু ‘আসর’ থেকে উৎপত্তি হয়েছে। আশুরার দিনটি মুসলিম বিশ্বে পালন করলেও সুন্নি এবং শিয়ারা সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন কারণে এবং ভিন্নভাবে এই দিনটি পালন করে থাকে। এছাড়াও এই দিনটি নিয়ে প্রচলিত রয়েছে নানারকম কথা, যেগুলোর অনেকগুলোই কিছু মানুষের কল্পনাপ্রসূত, ধর্মের সাথে যেগুলোর কোনো সম্পর্কই নেই। চলুন জেনে নেয়া যাক, কীভাবে আশুরা আসলো আর এ দিনটি নিয়ে ভ্রান্ত ধারণাগুলো।
