About a 5 hour drive from Toronto is Killarney Provincial Park, home to one of the clearest lakes in all of Ontario. Nellie Lake, nestled in one of the most remote parks of the park, features crystal clear waters that draws in explorers from far and wide.
It's not an easy trek to get to Nellie though. Our journey consisted of a 10 km canoe paddle on Georgian Bay, followed by two short portages and paddles across two small lakes, then a massive 2.4 km portage (primarily uphill). But the trek was well worth it.
Only three campsites exist on Nellie Lake. The lake is flanked on all sides by rolling hills of quartzite, a chemically inert rock that doesn't neutralize the acid rain that falls and collects in the lake. That's why it's a dead lake - no fish, no vegetation, and super clear.
It so clear, you can see up to 30 meters down! It's such a serene and pristine place that only a small amount of people get to experience each year.
So, make sure Nellie Lake is on your list of backcountry camping sites to explore the next time you're in Southern Ontario.
